History of Waqf In Islam


Wafq in islam was established during the prophet Muhammad pbuh. Accordingly was is not the result of thought of mujtahids and the faqih ( Islamic jurist) after he died.

Even some sholars believe tahat waqf was originatedfrom God’s revelation contained in the exalted book of holy Qur’ an. However, waqf was born from a direct explantion of the prophet Muhammad phub., about alquran. Because many of faqih ( fiqh experts) conclude that the argument of mashru’iyyah (legitimacy) of waqf in islam is Qur’an and sunnah of prophet.

  1. Al-quran

Al-Qur’an is the revelation of Allah Almighty :

“Ye will not attain unto piety until ye spend of that which ye love. And whatsoever ye spend, Allah is aware thereof. Al-Qur’an verse aali Imran : 92


  1. Sunnah

There are many hadith on waqf , among them are :

  1. Word of the prophet

Narrated from abu Hurairah , that he prophet phub, said ; if a human died, every deed is terminated except the three, namely perpetual charity (waqf), knowledge which is utilized and transferred or a pious children who pray for parents”


  1. Utterance of the prophet

“it was naarated from Ibn Umar, he said ; “ Umar said to the prophet : I have one hundred part of Khaibar. I have never had assets that I admire most like that. But I want to endow them. “ Then The holy Prophet told ‘Umar : “ Preserve (meaning : do not sell, donate and inherit) the origin (assets) and made the result charitable in Allah interest.
